T-mobile has started a series of commercials that mimic the Apple "PC versus MAC" ads in an effort to poke fun at Apple iPhone's commitment to AT&T, which is not the best telecom network out there. These ads show a cute girl in a pink dress (T-Mobile's signature color) next to a youngish guy in a decent suit who is either getting weighed down by AT&T or trying to escape from him.
Sure, I "get" these ads and what they're trying to do. But I'm still left wondering if they work. In essence, they're really make fun of AT&T, but doing it through Apple, which seems like either a cheap shot on Apple or a weak way to tackle AT&T directly. I mean, the T-mobile woman mostly empathizes with the Apple iPhone guy - which is likely because at some point Apple may partner with T-mobile for their phone service and they don't really want to piss them off. But in the end, I'm just left thinking (1) T-mobile should come up with something original instead of degrading the original PC vs. MAC ads, and (2) Man, those PC vs. MAC ads were pretty great and I miss seeing them.
So who gets the last laugh? These commercials leave me feeling nothing about AT&T, slight disdain for T-Mobile's lack of creativity and cheap shots, and ongoing love and support for Apple. My 2 cents: Steve Jobs is still laughing his ass all the way to the bank.
Thanks to my brother for encouraging me to write about this commercial. His feedback (via my Verizon network): "it's stupid."
